Suriya’s heat was more intense this time but not any longer: the rest of that day after Kenosi brought him over and one full day after that, and by the following evening, it was over. Kenosi stayed with him and fussed over him, encouraging him to bathe and eat, and held Suriya through the night and brought him off without complaining whenever Suriya asked. It was just the same as it had been the first time, with Suriya feeling so secure and happy, confident that Kenosi would take care of him. If anything, it was better, because he was in his own familiar rooms that smelled like him. Deep in the selfish single-mindedness of heat, he was convinced that Kenosi wanted nothing more than to tend to his every whim, and Kenosi gave him no reason to think otherwise.

They talked some when Suriya was sated, about nothing of any importance. Kenosi told him another story, a long one that he said was real, from Setsenoy history, about a great warrior, an omega, who conquered the Emerald Isles back in the days when omegas were far more common than they were now.

“Do you wish I were a great warrior?” Suriya asked. They were still tied together, and the pressure of Kenosi’s knot inside him was a constant reminder of why Suriya hadn’t been taught to fight. In Chedi, and in most other places, omegas were for alliance marriages and childbearing, or the priesthood. There were no omega warriors even in Setsen these days.

Kenosi stroked Suriya’s hair back from his forehead. “No. Because then you would go fight great battles far away from me, and I would miss you.”

Suriya tucked his smile against Kenosi’s neck. “Then I’ll have to stay here and keep you company.” He clenched around Kenosi’s knot and shivered. “Tell me the rest.”

When his heat faded at last, late in the afternoon of the third day, he rolled over in bed and went to sleep for a while. He woke again to the sound of voices: Lesedi talking with Kenosi in the next room. The sun had set, and someone had lit the lanterns, filling his rooms with warm yellow light. The smell of food drifted in from the front room.

Kenosi came in, holding a tray with several small bowls on it. “Good, you’re awake. Are you hungry? Lesedi brought stew and dumplings.”

“That’s my favorite.” Suriya sat up, yawning, and rubbed at his face with both hands. He was a little sore, and he badly needed a hot bath. “Is she still here?”

“She went to ask for hot water for your bath,” Kenosi said. “I thought you might want one.”

“Yes. Thank you.” Of course Kenosi was still taking care of him even now. He watched as Kenosi went past him to set the tray on the veranda. Kenosi was wearing only his under-robe, sagging open to the waist because he hadn’t tied it closed securely. Suriya loved Kenosi’s sturdy body, his broad shoulders and strong thighs, and the perfect, even chestnut brown of his skin.
